Matthew 20:1–16
Jesus tells a story about a landowner who went out early in the morning to hire workers for his vineyard.

He agreed with the first workers to pay them one denarius for a day’s work. Later, he went out again at about the third hour, the sixth hour, the ninth hour, and even the eleventh hour, hiring more workers and sending them into his vineyard.

When evening came, the landowner told his manager to pay the workers, beginning with those who were hired last.

The workers who had worked only one hour received one denarius. When the workers who had worked all day saw this, they expected to receive more. But they also received one denarius.

They complained, saying, “These people worked only one hour, yet you have made them equal to us who worked all day.”

The landowner answered, “Friend, I am not being unfair to you. Did you not agree to work for one denarius? Take your pay and go. I want to give the one who was hired last the same as I gave you.”

Jesus then said:

“So the last will be first, and the first will be last.”
