Matthew 22:1–14

Jesus told another parable about the kingdom of heaven.

A king prepared a wedding banquet for his son. When everything was ready, he sent his servants to call the invited guests to the banquet. But they refused to come.

The king sent other servants, saying, “Tell those who have been invited that my banquet is ready. Everything has been prepared. Come to the wedding banquet!”

But the invited guests paid no attention. Some went to their fields, others went to their businesses, and some even mistreated and killed the king’s servants.

The king was angry and sent his army to punish those who had rejected his invitation.

Then the king said to his servants:

“The wedding banquet is ready, but those I invited did not deserve to come.”

So he told his servants to go out to the roads and invite everyone they could find, both good and bad.

The servants went out and gathered many people, and the wedding hall was filled with guests.

But when the king came in to see the guests, he noticed a man who was not wearing wedding clothes.

The king asked him, “Friend, how did you get in here without wedding clothes?”

The man had nothing to say.

Then the king ordered his servants to remove him from the banquet.

Jesus concluded:

“For many are invited, but few are chosen.”
