1 Kings Chapter 10

At that time, the Queen of Sheba had already heard about the fame of King Solomon.

The Queen of Sheba thought to herself:

“I have to go and see for myself just how capable this Solomon really is.”

So she brought a large number of camels, loaded with spices, precious stones, and a great amount of gold, and went in grand procession to Jerusalem.

When she came before Solomon, she did not hold back and told Solomon all the questions that were on her mind.

These were not ordinary questions; they were difficult and required a lot of thought.

And what happened?

King Solomon did not hold back either. Whatever she asked, Solomon answered, without hiding anything from her.

When the Queen of Sheba saw this, she realized that his reputation was truly deserved.

She first observed Solomon’s wisdom, then looked at the palace he had built, the food on his table, the places where his officials sat, how his servants attended to him, their clothing, and his cupbearers; she even carefully observed the steps by which they went up to the temple of the LORD.

The queen was quite astonished at what she saw.

She thought to herself, “Oh my goodness! This is even greater than what I had heard!”

So she said to Solomon:

“In my own country, I heard about you and your wisdom, but at first I was only half-convinced.

But now I have come and seen it with my own eyes, and I realize that what I heard before did not even tell me half of it!”

“Your wisdom and your blessings are greater than what I had heard.”

“Your officials and servants who stand before you continually and hear your words of wisdom are truly blessed!”

Then the Queen of Sheba said, “Blessed be the LORD your God!

He delights in you, and that is why He has placed you on the throne of Israel.

Because He has loved Israel forever, He has made you king, so that you may uphold justice and righteousness.”

After saying this, the Queen of Sheba brought gifts and gave them to Solomon.

The Queen of Sheba finally gave her gifts to Solomon. What were the gifts?

There were one hundred and twenty talents of gold, along with a great amount of spices, precious stones, and other things.

There were so many spices that afterward, no such great quantity of spices ever came in again.

At the same time, Hiram’s fleet also brought gold from Ophir, along with a great amount of algum wood and precious stones.

What did King Solomon do with all this algum wood?

He used it to make railings for the temple of the LORD and for the royal palace, and also made harps and lyres for the singers.

This algum wood was no ordinary wood. After that, no such wood of this quality came in again, and no one has seen such wood to this day.

When the Queen of Sheba was about to leave, Solomon treated her generously.

Whatever the queen wanted or desired, whatever she asked for, Solomon gave her.

Finally, the Queen of Sheba and her servants returned to her own country, richly supplied with gifts.

At that time, the gold that came to Solomon in one year amounted to six hundred and sixty-six talents.

Besides this, merchants, the kings of various countries, and the governors of the land also brought gold as tribute to him.

How wealthy was King Solomon?

He used hammered gold to make two hundred large shields.

Each shield used six hundred shekels of gold.

He also made three hundred small shields, each using three minas of gold.

All these golden shields were placed in the House of the Forest of Lebanon.

Solomon also made a magnificent great throne.

It was made of ivory and overlaid with pure gold.

The throne had six steps.

The top of its back was rounded, and there were armrests on both sides.

Two lions stood beside the armrests.

There were twelve lions standing on the six steps, two on each step.

The whole sight was incredibly majestic.

The Bible says that no other kingdom had anything like this throne.

All of King Solomon’s drinking vessels were made of gold.

All the vessels in the House of the Forest of Lebanon were also made of pure gold.

In those days, silver was considered almost worthless in Jerusalem.

In other words, there was so much money that people hardly considered it valuable.

Solomon also had a fleet that went to Tarshish together with Hiram’s fleet.

They returned once every three years.

Each time they brought back gold, silver, ivory, apes, and peacocks.

So just think about how great Solomon’s wealth and wisdom were in those days.

The Bible says: His wealth and wisdom surpassed that of all the kings of the earth.

People from all over the world wanted to see Solomon.

Why? Because they wanted to hear with their own ears the wisdom God had given him.

None of these people came empty-handed. Each one brought gifts: gold vessels, silver vessels, clothing, weapons, spices, mules, and horses. It happened this way year after year.

King Solomon also had a very powerful military force.

He gathered one thousand four hundred chariots and twelve thousand horsemen.

Some were stationed in the cities where the chariots were kept, and some were in Jerusalem near the king.

What was Jerusalem like in those days?

Silver was as plentiful as stones.

Cedar wood was also extremely abundant, like the sycamore trees in the foothills.

Solomon’s horses were brought from Egypt.

The king’s merchants purchased them at the set price.

A chariot purchased from Egypt cost six hundred shekels of silver.

A horse cost one hundred and fifty shekels of silver.

Even the kings of the Hittites and the kings of Aram purchased chariots and horses through King Solomon’s merchants.
