Elisha Makes the Axe Head Float
Elisha was living with a group of the prophets. After some time, they realized that the place was really too small and crowded.
The disciples said to Elisha, “Teacher, look, this place is too small, and it is too crowded for so many of us. How about we go down to the Jordan River, cut some wood, and build a bigger place for ourselves?”
Elisha said, “Okay, go ahead.”
One of the disciples said, “Teacher, please come with us too!”
Elisha said, “All right, I’ll go with you.”
So they went to the Jordan River, saw the large trees, and started working. They cut down one tree after another.
As they were working, suddenly,
After one of the disciples swung his axe, and “CLANG!”
The iron axe head flew into the river.
This made him extremely worried.
He quickly cried out, “Oh no! My master! This is terrible! This axe isn’t mine; I borrowed it! Now the iron head has fallen into the water. How am I going to return it to its owner?”
If it had been his own property, losing it would have been one thing, and he could have figured something out. But normally, when you borrow something from someone, you are expected to return it. Now he had no idea how he was going to explain this to the owner.
Elisha asked him, “Where did it fall?”
The man quickly pointed into the water and said, “It fell right there!”
Elisha went over, cut a piece of wood, and threw it into the water.
Strangely enough, the iron axe head that had sunk to the bottom suddenly floated to the surface!
Elisha said to him, “There you go. Pick it up.”
The man quickly reached out and picked up the axe head.
