More Than 500 Million Christians Face Barriers to Bible Access

Report: Chicago, October 1, 2026 — Bible Access Initiative has released its second annual Bible Access List, estimating that more than 500 million Christians worldwide face restrictions in accessing the Bible due to persecution-related factors, including government controls, extremist violence, and pressure from families and communities. About 250 million are estimated to face “very difficult” conditions.

The report covers 106 countries. It assesses Bible access across multiple dimensions, including persecution-related restrictions as well as socioeconomic barriers such as poverty, lack of electricity, low literacy, and limited internet access. The top five countries on the report’s Bible Restrictions List are:

🇦🇫 Afghanistan
🇾🇪 Yemen
🇸🇴 Somalia
🇰🇵 North Korea
🇪🇷 Eritrea

A separate Bible Shortage List estimates the number of Christians who need a Bible but have not yet received one. The report estimates that the Bible shortage in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Ethiopia, Nigeria, and India exceeds 10 million people in each country.

The report also emphasizes that “availability” does not always mean “access.” It estimates that more than 400 million Christians live in 42 countries where internet access is limited, meaning digital Bibles cannot solve every Bible-access challenge.

🙏 Prayer Focus

Pray for Christians around the world who cannot freely obtain a Bible. May God protect believers facing persecution and open doors for the translation, printing, transportation, and distribution of Scripture, so that more people can safely read God’s Word.
