One day, Jeroboam king of the northern kingdom of Israel was standing beside the altar at Bethel, burning incense.

Wasn’t this place supposed to be a place where the LORD was worshiped?

But Jeroboam had deliberately set up two golden calves and established an altar at Bethel.

And just at that moment—

A man of God came from Judah.

This man of God wasn’t there just to pay a casual visit.

He had come to Bethel specifically because the LORD had commanded him to deliver a message.

He stood before the altar and called out:

“Altar! Altar!

This is what the LORD says:

A son will be born to the house of David, and his name will be Josiah.

He will kill the priests of the high places who burn incense on you, and human bones will be burned on you!”

But that wasn’t all.

The man of God continued, “The LORD has also given you a sign:

This altar will surely split apart, and the ashes on it will be poured out!”

That was pretty strong, wasn’t it? He wasn’t negotiating with the king. He was delivering God’s command and directly declaring God’s judgment.

When King Jeroboam heard this, his face immediately darkened.

He thought, “Hey! You come here and say all this right in front of me? What do you mean by that?”

So he pointed at the man of God and shouted:

“Seize him!”

But right at that moment—

Something strange happened.

The king’s outstretched hand suddenly became withered!

He tried to pull it back, but he couldn’t!

He tried to bend it, but he couldn’t!

Then the sign the man of God had just spoken about came to pass.

“Crack!”

The altar—split apart!

And the ashes on the altar spilled down.

Now Jeroboam was completely stunned.

The king who had just been so commanding now had a useless hand, and the altar had split apart.

So he quickly humbled himself before the man of God and said:

“Oh, man of God, please pray for me right away!

Ask the LORD your God to show me mercy and restore my hand!”

The man of God didn’t say much. He prayed to the LORD.

结果——
And then—

The king’s hand was restored.

When Jeroboam saw that his hand had been restored, his attitude immediately changed.

Just moments ago he wanted to seize the man, but now he spoke to him as if nothing had happened:

“Man of God, come back to the palace with me. I want to give you a good meal! I’ll also give you a reward.”

But the man of God shook his head and said:

“Even if you gave me half of your possessions, I would not go in with you.

I will not eat or drink here either.

For the LORD has commanded me:

‘You must not eat or drink at Bethel, and you must not return by the same road you came.’”

After saying this, the man of God turned around and left. And sure enough, he did not take the same road back. The man of God kept the command of God.

There was an old prophet living in Bethel.

After his sons returned, they told him everything that had just happened.

“Father, you wouldn’t believe it! A man of God came today!

He spoke a whole bunch of words against the altar.

And the king’s hand became withered, and the altar split apart!”

When the old prophet heard this, he quickly asked:

“Where did that man go?”

His sons told him which direction the man had gone.

When the old prophet heard that, he said:

“Prepare a donkey for me!”

So he mounted the donkey and went after him.

After chasing him for a while, he finally found the man of God sitting under an oak tree.

The old prophet asked, “Are you the man of God who came from Judah?”

The man of God said, “Yes.”

The old prophet said, “Come with me to my house. We can eat and talk.”

The man of God quickly shook his head. “No.

The LORD has already commanded me. I cannot stay here, and I cannot return by the same road.”

But then the old prophet said something unexpected:

“I am also a prophet, just like you.

And an angel spoke to me by the command of the LORD, saying:

‘Go and bring this man of God back to your house, so that he may eat and drink there.’”

你看。
You see.

Doesn’t that sound very convincing?

“I am also a prophet.”

“An angel told me.”

“It is the command of the LORD.”

It sounds pretty reasonable.

But the Bible tells us directly:

The old prophet was deceiving the man of God.

But the problem was that the man of God already knew the command that the LORD Himself had given him.

So how could someone who claimed to be a prophet now come along and say:

“God has given me a new command.”

Whom should the man of God listen to?

What would you do if you were him?

But in the biblical account, the man of God went back home with the old prophet.

And while they were eating—

突然!
Suddenly!

The word of the LORD came to the old prophet.

This time, the old prophet was not speaking on his own.

It was truly the LORD speaking to him.

The old prophet turned to the man of God and said:

“This is what the LORD says: Because you have disobeyed the word of the LORD,

and have not kept the command your God gave you,

you have disobeyed the LORD’s command by eating and drinking in a place where you were not supposed to remain. Therefore, your body will not be buried in the tomb of your ancestors.”

At that moment, the room suddenly became silent. The man of God finished eating.

The old prophet prepared a donkey for him.

The man of God mounted the donkey and set out.

Who would have thought?

He had not gone very far—

when suddenly a lion appeared.

“Roar!”

The lion pounced on the man of God and killed him.

His body fell on the road.

But strangely—

the donkey did not run away.

And the lion did not eat his body.

They simply stood there, one on each side.

The body lay between them.

Later, someone passed by, saw this strange scene, and hurried back to Bethel to tell the people in the city.

When the old prophet heard the news, he sighed and said:

“This is the man of God who disobeyed the command of the LORD.

The LORD has allowed this to happen to him, just as the LORD had spoken through him.”

Then the old prophet said, “Prepare a donkey for me.”

He went there and brought back the body of the man of God on the donkey.

Then he buried him in his own tomb.

They mourned for the man of God, saying, “Alas, my brother!”

After the burial, the old prophet also said to his sons:

“When I die, bury me in the tomb where this man of God is buried.

Place my bones beside his bones.

Because the words he spoke by the command of the LORD against the altar at Bethel and against the high places in the cities of Samaria will surely come to pass.”

At this point in the story, you might think:

“The king saw such great signs—his hand became withered and was restored, and the altar split apart. Surely he would repent now, right?”

结果——
But the result was—

没有。
No.

Jeroboam continued down his old path.

He still did not turn away from his evil ways.

He continued to appoint people from among the common people as priests for the high places.

Whoever was willing to do it, he appointed.

And what was the result?

The Bible gives a very solemn conclusion:

This became the sin of the house of Jeroboam, and it led to the destruction of his house from the face of the earth.
