Bible Translation Is Shifting Toward Local Churches

For decades, Bible translation was largely driven and supported by Western missionary organizations. Today, as the center of Christianity increasingly shifts toward the Global South and East, more local churches are taking an active role—and in some cases leading Bible translation efforts themselves.

According to Wycliffe, Bible translation is undergoing a significant shift: local churches are no longer simply recipients of translated Scripture, but are becoming key drivers of translation efforts, while Western organizations increasingly serve in supporting roles such as training, resources, and technical assistance.

Wycliffe reports that 24,549 Scripture chapters were translated during the first half of 2026. As of July 1, the organization was involved in Bible translation projects covering more than 3,100 languages, while approximately 535 known languages had not yet begun translation.

Wycliffe also emphasizes that when people encounter Scripture in their own language, it can help individuals grow in their faith, encourage discipleship, and contribute to the growth of local churches.

However, missiological research also offers an important reminder: having a Bible translation does not necessarily mean that Scripture is being fully used.

《Evangelical Missions Quarterly》(EMQ)

An article in Evangelical Missions Quarterly points out that some challenges facing churches in the Global South may involve more than a lack of Bible translations. They may also be connected to whether believers actually use Scripture, participate in Bible study, and allow Scripture to become part of everyday church life.

This means that the goal of Bible translation is not simply to “translate the Bible,” but to help God’s Word truly enter the language, culture, families, and church life of a people.

FaithLoop 观察:

FaithLoop Perspective:

The center of Bible translation is changing. In the past, many translation projects were initiated by Western organizations. Today, an increasing number of churches in the Global South and East are participating and taking leadership roles.

This represents more than a change in missionary models. It also shows that churches around the world are increasingly moving from being “recipients” to becoming “participants” and “drivers” of the mission.

Yet the deeper question remains: After the Bible reaches people in their heart language, will they actually open it, know God through it, and live according to it?
