(2 Kings 8) Story: Elisha Foresees Hazael Becoming King of Aram

King Ben-hadad of Aram became sick, and he was seriously ill.

When he heard that Elisha had come to Damascus, he thought, “This is a man of God! I’d better go ask him whether I’m going to recover from this illness.”

So Ben-hadad called his servant Hazael and said, “Take a proper gift and go see Elisha right away. Ask him whether there is any hope for me to recover from this illness.”

When Hazael heard this, he thought, “Then I’d better take this seriously and prepare something impressive. After all, I’m going to seek out a man of God.”

So he took forty camels, loaded them with all kinds of fine goods from Damascus, and set off in a grand procession.

After traveling for a long time, they finally arrived before Elisha. Hazael respectfully said, “Man of God, your servant King Ben-hadad of Aram has sent me to ask you, ‘Will he recover from his illness?’”

After hearing this, Elisha’s expression became somewhat complicated.

He said, “Go back and tell your king, ‘You will certainly recover.’ But the LORD has shown me that he will certainly die.”

Hazael was completely confused.

“Oh no, how am I supposed to explain this when I get back? Am I supposed to tell the king that he will eventually die? But wait—the man of God said he would recover. What does this mean?”

Before he could react, Elisha suddenly stared intently at him. This made Hazael feel a little uneasy. It made him extremely uncomfortable, as if his thoughts had been seen through.

Hazael thought, “What’s going on, man of God? Why do you keep staring at me? Just say what you have to say. Don’t scare me…”

Then, as he continued looking at him, Elisha suddenly began to weep.

Hazael was completely baffled. Everything had been fine just a moment ago, so why had he suddenly started crying?

So he quickly asked, “My lord, what’s wrong? Why did you suddenly start crying?”

Elisha said, “I am crying because I know how you will treat the people of Israel in the future.”

Hazael still did not understand.

But what Elisha said next left him completely stunned.

Elisha told him:

“You will burn the fortified cities of Israel.”

“You will kill their young men with the sword.”

“You will dash their infants to pieces.”

“You will even rip open the bellies of their pregnant women.”

When Hazael heard this, he quickly said, “Me? How could I possibly do something that terrible? I’m nothing more than a dog. How could I ever do such a thing?”

How could Hazael possibly have imagined what would happen in the future at that time?

But Elisha told him, “The LORD has shown me that you will become king over Aram.”

Hazael left Elisha and returned to his master, Ben-hadad. Ben-hadad asked him, “What did Elisha tell you?” Hazael answered, “He told me that you will certainly recover.”

He did not mention what Elisha had said about the king eventually dying.

Then, the very next day, it happened.

Hazael took a wet cloth that had been soaked in water and spread it over Ben-hadad’s face.

Ben-hadad died this way.

And Hazael became king over Aram.
