(2 Kings 6–7) Samaria Is Besieged, and the People Fall into Famine

The king of Aram brought a large army against Israel and surrounded the city of Samaria so completely that no one could get in or out.

The people inside the city could not get out, and food from outside could not get in.

As the days went by, the famine became more and more severe.

A donkey’s head was being sold for eighty shekels of silver, and the people were so hungry that they had almost no strength left.

One day, while the king was inspecting the city wall, a woman cried out to him for help and told him about the most terrible situation in the city.

When the king heard this, he tore his clothes right there.

The people then saw that he was wearing sackcloth next to his skin.

But the sorrow in his heart soon turned into anger, and his anger found someone to blame: he decided that all of this was Elisha’s fault.

“Today, I must have Elisha’s head cut off!”

The king immediately sent a man to kill Elisha.

At that time, Elisha was sitting in his house with the elders.

He said to the elders, “Look, the son of this murderer has sent someone to take my head.

When he arrives, shut the door and hold it firmly against him.

Isn’t the sound of his master’s footsteps right behind him?”

Before he had even finished speaking, the king himself arrived.

He said, “This disaster is from the LORD. Why should I wait for the LORD any longer?”

But Elisha was not afraid at all. He said, “Hear the word of the LORD.

The LORD says: By this time tomorrow, at the gate of Samaria, a measure of fine flour will sell for one shekel of silver, and two measures of barley will also sell for one shekel.”

The officer on whom the king relied immediately scoffed, “Even if the LORD opened windows in heaven, such a thing could never happen!”

Elisha looked at him and said, “You will see it with your own eyes, but you will not eat any of it.”

That night, God caused the camp of the Arameans to hear sounds: the sound of chariots and horses, like a vast army approaching.

The Arameans panicked and said to one another, “Surely the king of Israel has hired the armies of the Hittites and the Egyptians to attack us!”

They fled for their lives during the night, leaving their tents, horses, donkeys, and the entire camp just as it was.

There were four men with leprosy sitting outside the city gate.

They said to one another, “Why should we sit here until we die?

There is famine in the city, and if we go inside, we will die there.

Let us go over to the Arameans. If they spare our lives, we will live; if they kill us, we will only die.”

At dusk, they went into the Aramean camp, and there was no one there.

They went into one tent, ate and drank, and took silver, gold, and clothing and hid them; then they went into another tent and did the same thing.

After a while, they said to one another, “What we are doing is not right.

Today is a day of good news, and we are keeping silent.

If we wait until daylight, punishment will surely come upon us.

Come, let us go and tell the king’s household.”

They returned to the city gate and called out to the gatekeepers, and the news was passed on until it reached the palace.

The king got up in the middle of the night and at first did not believe it, thinking that the Arameans had set a trap.

Later, he sent men to investigate, and they followed the trail all the way to the Jordan River, where the road was covered with clothing and equipment that the Arameans had thrown away as they fled.

The people rushed out and plundered the Aramean camp.

As a result, a measure of fine flour sold for one shekel, and two measures of barley also sold for one shekel, just as the LORD had said.

The king appointed that officer to manage the crowds at the city gate.

The people rushed out, trampled him at the city gate, and he died.

Not one word that Elisha had spoken failed to come true.

He saw it with his own eyes, but he did not eat any of it.
