After Ahab died, his son Joram succeeded him as king of Israel.
Joram did evil in the eyes of the LORD, though he was not as evil as his father and mother.
He removed the sacred pillar of Baal that his father Ahab had made.
However, he continued in the sin that Jeroboam son of Nebat had caused Israel to commit—the worship of the golden calves—and he would not turn away from it.
At that time, Mesha king of Moab rebelled against Israel.
Mesha was a sheep breeder, and each year he used to pay the king of Israel a tribute of one hundred thousand lambs and the wool of one hundred thousand rams.
But when Ahab died, he rebelled against Israel and stopped paying the tribute.
King Joram naturally would not let this go, so he immediately marched out from Samaria and mustered the entire army of Israel.
He also sent word to Jehoshaphat king of Judah, saying:
“The king of Moab has rebelled against me. Will you go with me to fight against Moab?”
Jehoshaphat answered:
“I will go. I am as you are, my people as your people, and my horses as your horses.”
Joram asked:
“By which route shall we go?”
The answer was:
“By way of the wilderness of Edom.”
So the king of Israel, the king of Judah, and the king of Edom set out together.
After they had traveled around by a seven-day route, there was no water for the army or for the animals following them.
Joram became alarmed and said:
“Alas! The LORD has called these three kings together to deliver us into the hands of Moab!”
But Jehoshaphat said:
“Is there no prophet of the LORD here? We can inquire of the LORD through him.”
One of the servants of the king of Israel said:
“Elisha son of Shaphat is here—the one who used to pour water on the hands of Elijah.”
Jehoshaphat said:
“The word of the LORD is with him.”
So the king of Israel, Jehoshaphat, and the king of Edom went down to Elisha.
Elisha said to the king of Israel:
“What have I to do with you? Go to the prophets of your father and the prophets of your mother!”
Joram said:
“Do not say that! The LORD has called these three kings together to deliver us into the hands of Moab!”
Elisha said:
“As surely as the LORD Almighty lives, whom I serve, if I did not regard the presence of Jehoshaphat king of Judah, I would not look at you or pay any attention to you.
Now bring me someone who can play the harp.”
When the musician played, the hand of the LORD came upon Elisha.
他说:
He said:
“This is what the LORD says: Make this valley full of trenches.
For this is what the LORD says: You will see neither wind nor rain, yet this valley will be filled with water, and you, your livestock, and your other animals will drink.
This is an easy thing in the eyes of the LORD; he will also give Moab into your hands.
You will overthrow every fortified city and every fine city, cut down every good tree, stop up every spring, and ruin every good field with stones.”
The next morning, at the time of the morning sacrifice, water suddenly came flowing from the direction of Edom, and the land was filled with water.
Meanwhile, when the Moabites heard that the three kings had come up to fight against them, they gathered everyone who was able to bear arms, even the older men, and stationed them at the border.
In the morning, they got up, and the sun shone on the water.
The Moabites looked across from the other side, and the water appeared as red as blood.
They said:
“This is blood! Surely the three kings have fought against each other and killed one another! Moabites, now go and take the plunder!”
When the Moabites came to the camp of Israel, the Israelites rose up and attacked them, and the Moabites fled before them.
The Israelites pursued them into the land of Moab, striking them down along the way.
They destroyed the cities of Moab, and each man threw stones onto every good field until it was covered; they also stopped up every spring and cut down every good tree.
In the end, only Kir-hareseth was left, with its stones still standing.
But the men who carried slings surrounded the city and attacked it.
When King Mesha of Moab saw that the battle was too fierce for him, he took seven hundred swordsmen and tried to break through to the king of Edom.
But they could not break through.
So he took his firstborn son, who was to succeed him as king, and offered him as a burnt offering on the city wall.
Then great anger came upon Israel.
So they withdrew from the king of Moab and returned to their own land.
