English News
Christian Daily International reported on October 2 that a new survey by the UK-based mission agency Crosslinks suggests that many long-term overseas missionaries had previous experience in short-term mission, church apprenticeships, or other cross-cultural ministry before entering long-term service.
The “Pathways to Mission” survey gathered responses from 87 Crosslinks mission partners to understand how individuals moved from an initial interest in cross-cultural ministry toward long-term overseas service.
The survey found that 76% of long-term mission partners had taken between one and 10 short-term mission trips before committing to long-term overseas ministry, while 8% had completed seven to 10 short-term placements.
Crosslinks said summer camps, gap years, language study abroad, church mission teams, and other short-term opportunities can give Christians practical exposure to cross-cultural ministry.
The research also found that the journey from first considering overseas mission to actually leaving for the field can take many years. Seven to 10 years was the most common timeframe, while more than a quarter of respondents said the process took even longer.
More than half of the respondents had completed a church apprenticeship before leaving for overseas ministry, while almost all had received some form of formal theological training.
Crosslinks said the findings could help local churches and mission agencies better understand the pathway into long-term mission and provide candidates with patient pastoral support, training, and preparation.
