After Solomon became king, he kept thinking about one thing: building a temple for the LORD—God.

So he sent messengers to King Hiram of Tyre and said to him:

“You know that my father David had always wanted to build a temple for God, but he was constantly fighting wars and surrounded by enemies, so he simply did not have the opportunity.

Things are different now. God has blessed me; the country is at peace, and we have abundant resources.

So I have made up my mind to build a temple for the LORD my God.

This is also what God had promised my father David: ‘Your son will succeed you as king, and he will build a temple for my name.’

So I would like to ask you for a favor.

The cedar trees from Lebanon are especially good. Could you have your people cut some cedar wood for me and bring it here?

My workers will work together with your people.

As for the wages, whatever you ask, I will pay.”

When King Hiram heard this, he was very pleased and said:

“Today we truly should give thanks to the LORD! It seems that God has given David a very wise son to rule over all these people.”

So the two of them reached an agreement, formally made a treaty, and began working together.

Hiram provided Solomon with cedar and pine wood.

Solomon sent Hiram wheat and olive oil.

Solomon also selected thirty thousand men from among the Israelites to help build the temple.

Every month, he sent ten thousand men to Lebanon to cut wood.

They worked for one month and then went home for two months before another group took their place.

Adoniram was in charge of these workers.

In addition, Solomon had seventy thousand men who carried stones and eighty thousand who quarried stones in the mountains.

There were also three thousand three hundred supervisors who were responsible for managing the workers.

Solomon ordered them to quarry large, high-quality stones to use for the foundation of the temple.

In the fourth year of Solomon’s reign, in the second month, the month of Ziv, construction of the temple officially began.

This temple was certainly not small.

It was sixty cubits long, twenty cubits wide, and thirty cubits high.

There was also a porch outside the temple, with rooms and side chambers built around it.

There was also something particularly interesting:

When they built the temple, you could hardly hear the sound of hammering or other construction work at the site.

That was because the stones had already been prepared at another location, and when they arrived at the temple, they were simply fitted into place according to their measurements.

So there was no sound of hammers, axes, or other iron tools ringing at the construction site.

After the temple was built, Solomon used fine cedar wood to decorate the inside.

The floor was covered with pine wood.

Inside the temple was the most important place, called the inner sanctuary, or the Most Holy Place.

This was the place set apart especially for worshiping God.

Solomon covered the Most Holy Place with the finest gold and made the altar of incense out of cedar wood.

He also made two cherubim out of olive wood, representing heavenly beings who serve God.

Each cherub was ten cubits high.

The two cherubim were placed inside the Most Holy Place.

Their wings were spread out, with one wing touching one wall and the other wing touching the opposite wall.

The wings of the two cherubim touched each other in the middle.

The entire inside of the temple was beautifully decorated.

Solomon covered the temple with the finest gold and separated the Most Holy Place with gold chains.

The doors were also made of olive wood.

Cherubim, palm trees, and newly opened flowers were carved on the doors.

Then the doors were covered with gold.

The outer doorframes were also made of olive wood.

Many parts of the inside and outside of the temple were covered with gold.

There was also an inner courtyard made of cedar wood.

While Solomon was busy building the temple, God said to him:

“Solomon, you are now building a temple for me, and that is good.

But you need to remember something more important:

You must listen to me, obey my laws, follow my instructions, and keep my commandments.

If you do this, I will fulfill the promise I made to your father David.

I will live among the Israelites and will not leave my people.”

Finally, after seven years, Solomon completed the construction of the temple of the LORD.

The temple was finally completed.
