He brought silver, clothing, and valuable gifts, hoping to express his thanks.

However, Elisha firmly refused to accept any payment. He wanted Naaman to understand that God’s grace could not be bought with money—it was freely given.

After Naaman departed, Elisha’s servant, Gehazi, became greedy. He thought to himself:

“My master has refused these gifts, but I will get something from Naaman.”

Without telling Elisha, Gehazi secretly ran after Naaman.

When Naaman saw someone pursuing him, he got down from his chariot and asked with concern:

“Is everything all right?”

Gehazi replied with a lie:

“Everything is all right. My master has just received two young prophets, and they are in need of some silver and clothing. Please give them something.”

Trusting him completely, Naaman generously gave Gehazi twice as much silver as he requested and sent servants to help carry it.

When Gehazi returned home, he hid the silver and clothing and then stood before Elisha as though nothing had happened.

Elisha asked him:

“Where have you been, Gehazi?”

Gehazi answered:

“Your servant did not go anywhere.”

But God had already revealed the truth to Elisha.

Elisha said:

“Was not my spirit with you when the man got down from his chariot to meet you? Is this the time to take money and clothing?”

Then Elisha pronounced judgment:

“Naaman’s leprosy will cling to you and to your descendants forever.”

Immediately, Gehazi was struck with leprosy. His skin became white as snow.

Because of his greed and dishonesty, Gehazi lost the privilege of serving in God’s work and suffered the consequences of his sin.

Brief Reflection

God sees what is hidden in the human heart.
Greed and dishonesty can destroy even those who are close to God’s work.
God’s grace is a gift and should never be used for personal gain.

Sarah G.
