We need to bring it back to Jerusalem. This is God’s holy Ark, so we need to handle this the right way.”

So David gathered thirty thousand men and set out for Baalah of Judah to bring the Ark of God back.

Everyone was excited. They were singing, playing musical instruments, and celebrating as they went.

They brought the Ark out of the house of Abinadab and placed it on a new cart. Abinadab’s sons, Uzzah and Ahio, were guiding the cart.

Everything seemed to be going fine. But when they reached the threshing floor of Nacon, the oxen stumbled, and the Ark began to shake.

Uzzah saw what was happening and thought:

“Oh no! The Ark is going to fall!”

So he reached out his hand to steady it.

But something terrible happened.

The Lord became angry with Uzzah because of what he had done, and Uzzah died there beside the Ark.

David was shocked and deeply troubled.

Just a moment earlier, everyone had been celebrating and playing music. Now everyone stood there in silence.

David was afraid and said:

“How can I bring the Ark of the Lord to me?”

So David decided not to take the Ark into the City of David. Instead, he had it taken to the house of a man named Obed-Edom.

The Ark remained there for three months.

And guess what happened?

The Lord blessed Obed-Edom and his entire household.

When David heard that the Lord had blessed Obed-Edom because of the Ark, he became ready to bring the Ark back again.

This time, they handled the Ark with great care.

After the people carrying the Ark had taken six steps, David offered sacrifices. Then David, wearing a linen ephod, danced before the Lord with all his strength.

If you had been standing there watching, you might have thought:

“Is this really the king? He doesn’t look much like a king right now!”

But David didn’t care what people thought.

In his heart, he was thinking:

“I am celebrating before the Lord! What other people think doesn’t matter. I am worshiping God!”

So David and all the people of Israel continued celebrating, shouting and blowing trumpets as they brought the Ark into the City of David.

When the Ark was placed in the tent David had prepared for it, David offered burnt offerings and peace offerings before the Lord.

Then David blessed the people in the name of the Lord Almighty.

He also gave food to everyone—bread, meat, and a cake made with raisins.

Then everyone went home happily.

But when David returned home to bless his household, another problem came up.

Michal, the daughter of Saul and David’s wife, came out to meet him.

She had watched David dancing before the Lord, and she despised him in her heart. She thought that a king should behave with more dignity and that David had embarrassed himself in front of the people.

She sarcastically said to him:

“Wow, the king really made himself look important today! You certainly showed yourself off in front of everyone!”

David answered her:

“I was dancing before the Lord! The Lord chose me and made me ruler over His people Israel. So I will celebrate before the Lord.

And if you think what I did was humiliating, then I will humble myself even more.

I wasn’t doing this to make myself look important in front of people. I was doing it to honor and worship the Lord!”

Sarah After David became king over Israel, he thought to himself: “The Ark of the Covenant shouldn’t just stay at someone else’s house.
