“Your Majesty! David is hiding in the wilderness of En Gedi!”<\/p>\n
The moment Saul heard David’s name, he was energized again.<\/p>\n
“Finally! This time I’ll catch him!”<\/p>\n
Without wasting a second, Saul selected three thousand of Israel’s finest soldiers.<\/p>\n
Not just ordinary troops\u2014these were the best warriors in the nation.<\/p>\n
Together they marched toward En Gedi.<\/p>\n
En Gedi was a rugged place filled with steep cliffs, rocky caves, and wild mountain goats.<\/p>\n
Saul and his men searched everywhere.<\/p>\n
After a while Saul thought,<\/p>\n
“I need to step aside for a moment.”<\/p>\n
He spotted a cave by the road and went inside by himself.<\/p>\n
What Saul didn’t know was this:<\/p>\n
David and about six hundred of his men were hiding deep inside that very cave.<\/p>\n
The cave was dark.<\/p>\n
Saul was near the entrance.<\/p>\n
David was only a short distance behind him.<\/p>\n
David’s men could hardly believe what they were seeing.<\/p>\n
They whispered,<\/p>\n
“David!<\/p>\n
Look who it is!<\/p>\n
The Lord has delivered him into your hands!<\/p>\n
Now is your chance!”<\/p>\n
To them, this seemed like the perfect opportunity.<\/p>\n
Surely God had arranged everything.<\/p>\n
But David said nothing.<\/p>\n
He quietly stood up.<\/p>\n
Step by step…<\/p>\n
Slowly…<\/p>\n
Carefully…<\/p>\n
Without making a sound.<\/p>\n
He moved behind Saul.<\/p>\n
Everyone held their breath.<\/p>\n
They thought,<\/p>\n
“Saul is finished.”<\/p>\n
Then\u2014<\/p>\n
David pulled out his knife.<\/p>\n
Slice…<\/p>\n
He cut off a small corner of Saul’s robe.<\/p>\n
Then he quietly returned to his place.<\/p>\n
His men were stunned.<\/p>\n
“What?<\/p>\n
David…<\/p>\n
Why didn’t you kill him?<\/p>\n
He was standing right in front of you!”<\/p>\n
But something unexpected happened.<\/p>\n
As soon as David sat down, his heart was troubled.<\/p>\n
The Bible says,<\/p>\n
His conscience was stricken.<\/p>\n
He said,<\/p>\n
“No…<\/p>\n
I shouldn’t have even cut off part of his robe.<\/p>\n
No matter what Saul has done to me,<\/p>\n
he is still the king the Lord has anointed.<\/p>\n
God has not given me permission to harm him.<\/p>\n
I will not raise my hand against him.”<\/p>\n
Then David stopped his men.<\/p>\n
“No one touches him.<\/p>\n
No one will harm Saul today.”<\/p>\n
Although they didn’t understand, they obeyed.<\/p>\n
When Saul finished and walked out of the cave, he had no idea what had happened.<\/p>\n
He continued down the path.<\/p>\n
After Saul had gone a safe distance, David came out of the cave and called after him.<\/p>\n
“My lord the king!”<\/p>\n
Saul turned around.<\/p>\n
It was David.<\/p>\n
David immediately bowed low to the ground in respect.<\/p>\n
There was no arrogance.<\/p>\n
No challenge.<\/p>\n
Only humility.<\/p>\n
David called out,<\/p>\n
“My lord the king,<\/p>\n
why do you listen to people who tell you that I’m trying to harm you?<\/p>\n
Today you have seen the truth with your own eyes.<\/p>\n
The Lord placed you within my reach inside that cave.<\/p>\n
The men with me urged me to kill you.<\/p>\n
But I refused.<\/p>\n
Because I will not lay a hand on the Lord’s anointed.”<\/p>\n
Then David held up the piece of Saul’s robe.<\/p>\n
“My king, look!<\/p>\n
This came from your robe.<\/p>\n
If I had wanted to kill you,<\/p>\n
I wouldn’t be holding a piece of cloth.<\/p>\n
You would already be dead.<\/p>\n
I only want you to know that I have never intended to harm you.”<\/p>\n
David continued,<\/p>\n
“Why are you spending your time chasing me?<\/p>\n
I’m only your servant.<\/p>\n
Am I really worth bringing three thousand soldiers after?<\/p>\n
I have done nothing against you.<\/p>\n
I leave my case in the Lord’s hands.<\/p>\n
May He judge between you and me.<\/p>\n
May He defend me.<\/p>\n
But I will never take revenge with my own hands.”<\/p>\n
As David finished speaking,<\/p>\n
the entire valley became silent.<\/p>\n
When Saul heard David’s words,<\/p>\n
he broke down.<\/p>\n
Tears filled his eyes.<\/p>\n
He began to weep aloud.<\/p>\n
“David…<\/p>\n
You are more righteous than I am.<\/p>\n
You have treated me with kindness,<\/p>\n
while I have treated you with evil.<\/p>\n
Today the Lord handed me over to you,<\/p>\n
and anyone else would have killed me.<\/p>\n
But you spared my life.<\/p>\n
You have shown me mercy,<\/p>\n
and you truly fear God.”<\/p>\n
Then Saul sighed and said something remarkable.<\/p>\n
“I know that one day you will surely become king.<\/p>\n
The kingdom of Israel will be established under your rule.”<\/p>\n
This was the first time Saul openly admitted<\/p>\n
that David would one day be Israel’s next king.<\/p>\n
Saul had one final request.<\/p>\n
“David,<\/p>\n
when you become king,<\/p>\n
promise me one thing.<\/p>\n
Please don’t wipe out my family.<\/p>\n
Don’t let my family’s name disappear.”<\/p>\n
David answered without hesitation.<\/p>\n
“I swear before the Lord,<\/p>\n
I will not do that.”<\/p>\n
Saul returned home with his men.<\/p>\n
David, however, did not go back with him.<\/p>\n
He knew that although Saul was moved in that moment,<\/p>\n
human hearts can change.<\/p>\n
So David stayed in the strongholds with his men, continuing to trust the Lord for His timing and protection.<\/p>\n
