I have given the Philistines into your hands.”

So David and his men marched to Keilah.

They fought bravely, won a great victory, and rescued the people of the city.

But then, everything suddenly changed.

When Saul heard that David had entered Keilah, he was thrilled.

He said,

“I’ve finally got you now, David!”

“Ha! The city has gates and walls. This time, there’s no way you can escape.”

So Saul gathered his army and prepared to surround the city.

David prayed again.

“Lord, will Saul come down to attack Keilah?”

God answered,

“He will.”

David asked another question,

“Will the people of Keilah hand me over to Saul?”

God replied,

“They will.”

That answer must have pierced David’s heart.

He had just risked his life to save them.

Yet they were willing to betray the very man who rescued them.

That is often the reality of human nature.

Not everyone who receives kindness responds with gratitude.

David did not complain.

He did not become bitter.

Quietly, he gathered his six hundred men and left the city.

Later, David stayed in the wilderness, constantly moving from place to place.

Every day Saul searched for him.

But the Bible records these comforting words:

“Saul sought him every day, but God did not give David into his hands.” (1 Samuel 23:14)

Notice what happened.

It wasn’t that Saul lacked power.

It was simply because God would not allow it.

At one of David’s lowest moments, someone came to see him.

Who was it?

Jonathan.

What an incredible friend.

He didn’t come just to chat.

He didn’t come to gossip.

He came to strengthen David’s faith in God.

Jonathan said,

“Don’t be afraid. You will become the king of Israel. I will stand beside you. Even my father cannot stop God’s plan.”

Then the two of them renewed their covenant before the Lord.

Afterward, Jonathan returned home, while David continued his life as a fugitive.

Sometimes, a true friend isn’t the one who is always beside you.

A true friend is the one who lifts you up when you need encouragement the most.

Later, the people of Ziph betrayed David’s location to Saul.

Saul took three thousand of Israel’s finest soldiers to hunt him down.

Saul was on one side of the mountain.

David was on the other.

The distance between them grew smaller and smaller.

It seemed certain that David would soon be captured.

Then, at the very last moment, a messenger ran to Saul and shouted,

“Your Majesty! The Philistines have invaded the land!”

Saul had no choice but to stop chasing David and turn back to defend Israel.

Once again, David escaped.

Was it just a coincidence?

No.

It was God’s perfect timing.

God is never early.

God is never late.

He is always right on time.

Sarah Not long after that, the Philistines attacked the city of Keilah.
