2 Samuel 23:8–39

When David was king, he had a group of brothers-in-arms who were incredibly strong warriors.

These weren’t ordinary soldiers. Each one was battle-tested, fearless, and willing to risk his life.

The Bible calls them—David’s mighty warriors.

The first was Josheb-Basshebeth, also called Adino.

This guy was no joke when it came to fighting.

On one occasion, he struck down eight hundred men at one time.

Now, tell me—that’s pretty powerful, isn’t it?

He could stand on the battlefield, and the enemy would have to think twice before coming at him.

Next came Eleazar.

He was one of the most powerful warriors beside David.

One time, Israel was fighting against the Philistines.

When the Israelites saw that things were going badly, they took off running.

Everyone else ran away, but Eleazar didn’t.

He had only one thought in his heart:

“No! I can’t retreat!”

He stood his ground and continued fighting the Philistines.

He fought so hard that eventually his hand became exhausted and could hardly move.

His hand even became stuck to the handle of his sword.

But he still did not stop.

In the end, the LORD gave Israel a great victory.

Only after the people returned did they come back to collect the spoils of the battlefield.

True courage isn’t charging forward only when everyone else is charging; it is standing firm even when everyone else has run away.

Then there was a man named Shammah.

One time, the Philistines came into a field.

That field was full of lentils.

It was food that the people had worked hard to grow.

But when the Israelites saw the enemy coming, they became afraid and retreated.

But Shammah wasn’t having it.

He stood right in the middle of that field and said:

“You can run if you want, but I’m not going to let them take this field!”

So he stood alone defending the field and fought fiercely against the Philistines.

Once again, the LORD gave Israel a great victory.

One day, three of the warriors came to David.

At that time, the Philistine army was stationed at Bethlehem.

David was staying in his stronghold.

For some reason, David suddenly remembered the days of his youth.

He casually said:

“Oh, if only someone could give me a drink from the well near the gate of Bethlehem!”

David was simply expressing a longing.

But when the three warriors heard him, they took his words seriously.

They thought:

“David wants it? Then we’ll go get it for him!”

So the three men risked their lives and broke through the Philistine camp.

They fought their way through, went to the well near Bethlehem’s gate, and brought back water.

Then they brought it back to David, exhausted and out of breath.

When David saw it, he was stunned.

He thought:

“I only said it casually. Why did you actually go?”

David did not drink the water.

Instead, he poured it out before the LORD and said:

“LORD, how could I drink this? They risked their lives to get it. Wouldn’t it be like drinking their blood?”

So David would not drink it.

David understood:

True loyalty should never be taken for granted.

These three warriors were truly remarkable.

There was another powerful warrior named Abishai.

He was the brother of Joab.

He was also a fierce fighter and once struck down three hundred men.

Because of this, he became very well known among the warriors.

There was also a man named Benaiah.

This man was something else.

One time, he jumped into a pit and killed a lion.

And when did he do it?

On a snowy day!

Just think about that—

It was freezing and snowy outside, the ground was slippery, and he still dared to jump into a pit and fight a lion.

That took incredible courage.

Another time, a very large enemy came against him carrying a huge spear.

The shaft of the spear was like a weaver’s beam, and its iron head weighed six hundred shekels.

In other words, this was definitely not someone you wanted to mess with.

But Benaiah had only a club in his hand.

How was he supposed to fight that?

But Benaiah didn’t back down.

He charged forward and took the man’s spear away from him.

然后——
And then—

He killed the man with his own spear.

That’s how fearless he was.

Later, David recognized Benaiah’s abilities and placed him in charge of his personal guard.

Besides these famous warriors, David had many other men who were strong, loyal, and willing to risk their lives.

They included Asahel, Elhanan, Shammah, Elika, Helez, Ira, Abiezer, Mebunnai, Zalmon, Maharai, Heleb, Ittai, Benaiah, Hiddai, Abi-Albon, Azmaveth, Eliahba, the sons of Jashen, Ahiah, Eliphelet, Eliam, Hezro, Paarai, Igal, Mebunnai, Zelek, Naharai, Ira, Gareb, and Uriah the Hittite, among others.

These men came from different places—some from Judah, some from Benjamin, some from Gad, and even a Hittite and an Ammonite.

But they had one thing in common:

They were willing to follow David and stand up when trouble came.

The Bible finally says:

There were thirty-seven mighty warriors of David.

Thirty-seven men.

That may not sound like many.

But each one was willing to fight, endure hardship, and remain when others retreated.

They were not brave because the battlefield was safe.

Quite the opposite—

Their courage was even more precious because the danger was real.

This passage shows us that David was able to walk through so many difficult years not only because he was courageous, but also because God placed faithful people around him.

But we should not forget the most important thing:

Although these warriors were powerful, the Bible repeatedly reminds us that the One who truly gave Israel victory was the LORD.

Warriors can carry swords.

They can charge forward.

They can risk their lives.

But the final victory is still in God’s hands.

So true courage is not thinking:

“I’m so tough that I’m not afraid of anything.”

而是:
Rather, it is saying:

“I know what lies ahead may be dangerous, but because God is with me, when I need to stand firm, I will stand.”

That is what true warrior spirit looks like.

Today’s Question

What do you think a true warrior should be like?

Is it being brave, loyal, responsible, or being willing to stand firm with God even when everyone else retreats?
